Take Back The MDC

A Gathering Point for True Sportsmen

Going Unleaded

Thursday January 31st, 2008

Usually we post a new blog once a week but a new article in the NRA's American Hunter magazine got our attention the other day. And because the MDC is now urging shotgun hunters to attend classes showing them how successful you can be hunting with non-lead shot or steel loads, we decided we would like to tell the full story. The MDC Director John Hoskins obviously knows its going to be an uphill battle to implement a statewide lead ban.

So in order to soften the blow and slowly get hunters used to the thought of setting aside the lead shot, he has started putting the word out that hunters need to attend classes where no doubt they can continue to apply their guilt ridden propaganda in order to shame hunters into NOT using the cheaper lead shot. After all, we are killing wildlife with our evil lead shooting shotguns. Of course MDC's own studies show that this is not the case. Those studies are downloadable on the article page on this website.

But nowhere in the recent MDC mailing asking hunters to sign up for their steel shot clinics do they mention what this new transition is going to cost hunters upfront. Thank goodness TBTMDC is here to fill you in.

The NRA has recently listed the pros and cons of steel and more interestingly...THE COST!!

Listed below are the approved non-lead/steel based loads for small game other than water fowl that hunters will have to use with the new MDC regulations.

Winchester Supreme Elite
MSRP: $43.88 per box of 10 shells

Federal Premium Ultra-Shok
MSRP: $35.95 per box of 10 shells

Enviro-Metal Hevi-Shot
MSRP: $27.99 per box of 10 shells

Remington Wingmaster
MSRP: 33.88 per box of 10 shells.

Now those are some pretty steep prices for a box of only 10 shells. Remember the MDC is hoping to take this ban statewide in the future and would have maybe already done so if hunters like you hadn't stepped up and complained like you did to your elected officials. Who wants to spend $30 bucks to pattern a shotgun? Nobody I know. Of course in the recent MDC mailing, the price cost was somehow left out.

Let's not also forget that many shotguns cannot handle the increased pressure from these non-lead loads so many hunters will have to purchase new chokes and some will have to purchase new shotguns.

If you're unhappy with the MDC's decision in regards to lead and steel shot, be sure to call your elected representatives in Jefferson City and explain that your unhappy with how our MDC is spending our tax dollars and basically regulating us out of a sport. If an activity like hunting with shotguns becomes this expensive, we will undoubtedly see a decrease overall of hunters taking to the field.

All based on junk science. Let's hope we see new leadership soon.
