An article printed in the Jackson County Examiner reported a story of a Bald Eagle found that appeared to be sick. A concerned citizen saw the eagle sitting in a field for a longer period of time than might be normal and called the Missouri Department of Consevation.
Conservation agent Phil Needham responded to the scene and captured the eagle as it was apparent that it needed some sort of attention. The eagle was then transported to the Lakeside Nature Center to be examined. After some study the eagle had no broken bones and seemed to be fine on the outside. But a blood workup showed that the eagle had high lead levels in its body. X-Rays showed no evidence of lead pellets or lead bullets ingested by the eagle.
Yet unbelievably, the agent and the Nature Center concluded that the eagle was suffering from ingested lead pellets or bullets even though ZERO evidence existed to prove such speculation. Now I'm not an animal biologist, but as a popular radio talk show host often says, "but I am a thinker" and a quick search on google shows that animals can pick up high levels of lead from a variety of places. Not to mention if an animal is starving, the amount of normal lead in the animals system automatically rises.
The eagle could have visited a contaminated water source during its migration. How many old barns have we seen on the Missouri landscape with old paint that could very well be lead based that could have infected the ground around it? But none of the many possibilities I pulled up on the internet were mentioned in the article and yet they were sure that the reason was a bullet left by a hunter even though they had no proof for their conclusion.
Where I'm from, that's called junk science. I guess "Show Me" doesn't work for the MDC anymore.
My friends, there is a clear agenda at the MDC to bring about a California lead ban scheme like was recently passed by that states liberal anti-gun legislature. This will only result in less hunting and the MDC knows it and they will continue to use articles like this to eventually get the public to "bite the bullet" and accept a lead ban scam if we let it.
The MDC is clearly not looking out for the interest of hunters and sportsmen any longer. We have heard from a reader in Springfield that a hunter education instructor recently told a class that thousands of birds are dying because of the use of lead pellets in Missouri. There are absolutley no MDC funded studies that shows that but word has come down from the top to teach this to up and coming hunters. The phrase, "Show Me The Bodies" comes to mind. They can't.
Maybe in days past we could have counted on the Conservation Federation of Missouri to call the MDC on the carpet for this kind of irresponsible reporting and information but these days all activity is coordinated between the two entities and no oversight exists.
Luckily, folks can count on getting the real story on TBTMDC.
