Take Back The MDC

A Gathering Point for True Sportsmen

Introducing Bob Staton

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

I think we can all agree that those who lead our conservation department ought to have an impeccable resume and well documented history of leadership. As one senator recently stated, our Conservation Department is the "crown jewel" of all the nation's conservation departments and it's one they look up to for guidance on a regular basis.

With this fact in mind, the leadership of our conservation commission needs to be thoroughly screened before being appointed.

Ask yourself this one question while reading below. Are the other candidates on Gov. Blunts list for this appointment as qualified as Bob Staton?

Bob Staton Speaks on his Philosophy of Fish, Forest, and Wildlife Management:

I believe the Missouri Department of Conservation is vested with the authority to manage, restore, and protect the fish, forest and wildlife resources of the state of Missouri. The Department should never lose site of the fact that they are entrusted with this responsibility by the people, and not by the resources. The real science I believe in managing these resources is in balancing biological science with common sense. Should either one of these be left out of the equation, it can lead to mismanagement. I believe that the value of the fish, forest, and wildlife resources is not intrinsic. I don’t believe that trees, fish, or wild game have an innate value, but rather an extrinsic one. Their value is what humans place on them. Missouri consists of lands that are over 90% in private ownership, so most resource management will take place on private lands. This has to be done in a mutual beneficial partnership and not by heavy handed regulations.

Missouri is blessed with an abundance of natural resources and the wise use of those resources defines conservation. I have hunted, fished, and trapped most of my life and I have passed those traditions on to three children and they in turn are passing them on to their children. I believe the Missouri Department of Conservation can be the best in the world, but only if they remember that their first job is to serve the people and then serve the resource.
